As a black male in my 50’s, I totally agree with this woman. Anytime I hear black women naming their kids with weird, nonsensical names, I can only imagine how much drama and a head-ache the mother must be.
My Mom had a made up name. She gave my sisters made up names. One day they were all making fun of my normal name feeling sorry for me. I shut them up by telling them that all my life my friends had called me the lucky one for not having a stupid name. They were shocked. It was fun to be able to finally tell them what people Really thought
The irony, in Africa, so many people I met when I worked there had names like John and so many “American” names because to them it was status. I am worked with the most primitive tribes. There are no American “African” names there, No shawntiqas, no Jaequan… This is a silly notion that your name defines you. It can limit you, and your identity is now attached to a name.. Better they focus on TITLES, Like DOCTOR, ATTORNEY, that’s more important than your name. Your reputation is your ticket, not your name.
I am a white guy from New York who lives in Brazil, which is the largest black country out of Africa, and since the Blacks here like to imitate American Blacks in many ways, I would say that about 90% have regular Brazilian names, mostly Portuguese.
The soccer players here, take it to an extreme, however. Names like John Kennedy, Julius Caesar, and Victor Hugo are on their uniforms.
every time I hear a silly name that is clearly an attempt to prove how black you are I think I would never hire a person who had that name on their resume. It reeks of problems and HR hassles.
