She’s basically saying “we fudge the numbers to get the outcome we want.”

I had a woman “friend” argue with me that she should make as much as I do. She’s a secretary in a dental office on salary. I’m a truck driver in the northern Canadian oil patch, paid by the hour.

She works 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, with practically zero overtime.

I work 10-14 hr days, up to 6 days a week.

She sits in an office typing on a computer and answering phones.

I sit in a 125K lb vehicle, pounding up and down ice covered logging roads, require a course and license to do my job, require medical exams every 5 years, require upwards of 30 different orientations and various “tickets” just to be able to walk on the sites I work on. Many of those “tickets” I don’t even get paid for. Sites I work on can be extremely dangerous with anything from heavy trucks and equipment moving around, to temperatures approaching -40°C, to gases that could kill me in a heartbeat, either by explosion, or inhalation.

But somehow, she thinks we should make the same money every year.

  1. I spent a lot of my life driving truck for a living. I’ve pulled dry box vans, tankers, flatbeds, drop decks, and curtain sides. Most of my hauling was done with hauling building materials on flatbed and curtain side trailers. I once delivered some lumber to a lumberyard in a small town in Nebraska. After I removed the cargo straps the yard worker handed me a pair of tin snips and had me cut the bands holding the units of various lumber piles together. I was shocked and he said “We’re a small lumberyard. We can’t afford a forklift.” So I had to unload 4 units of various lumber by hand in that hot Nebraska sun and was only paid a whole $20.00 for that. What woman truck driver would do that? NONE! So, don’t tell me there’s unequal pay between men and women. Men end up having to do jobs women refuse to do so they get paid what they deserve for the work they actually do. If a person has to physically work hard, they should be paid accordingly. If a person sits in an air-conditioned office for only 8 hours a day behind a desk, they should be paid less than the person working their butt off.

  2. there actually is a gender pay gap. when you put a woman in the exact same job, same continuous hours, same benefits, and the same education the women will make more money. the gender pay gap is that women makes $1.13 dollars to the mans $1.00.

    • That´s a new one for me. OK, I am retired now for over 14 years, but back then men made a bit more than women for the same job.
As to the other commenter regarding hard work and office jobs, there can be a world of difference. You cannot compare the salaries of a laborer with a high-school education, if that, to a college-educated person in the office who studied for four years and paid $40,000.00 per year for his degree and getting the same pay. Let´s get real.

    • I don’t consider moving pixels around on a computer screen as much work. What does it actually produce? Obviously, 40K a year for a college degree is not money well spent, even if the general public has been made to pay for it via loan forgiveness. Considering the actual intelligence and educational level of many of these co-called college graduates -maybe a good percentage of these people should be asking for their money back.
