I think the first chic heard that this country was founded by people fleeing religious persecution and then stopped reading. They weren’t secular people fleeing a Theocracy, they were Protestants fleeing the persecution of the English Catholic Church. So, to clarify for her, they came here to found a country where they COULD practice their denomination of Christianity.
