I have to laugh anytime I read or hear a story about the Black Panthers. When I was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina during the Vietnam War with the 82nd Airborne as an MP we were called about the Black Panthers handing out anti war flyers to our black servicemen at one of the NCO club clubs. Our top sergeant, Sgt Bennett, was the blackest black man I ever met. His eyes were deep black and the whites of his eyes were bloodshot. He fought in Korea and Vietnam. We arrived at the club in our jeeps, 1 man white and the other man black. He made it clear to the black men if they weren’t willing to go inside the take care of business, stay outside. He said the first thing he would do was pull the plug out of the jukebox, pull his pistol out, point it at the ceiling and threaten to shoot it into the ceiling and the next bullet was going in someone’s body. There were about a dozen of Black Panthers inside and as sure as shit he did exactly what he said he would do and the badass Black Panthers left immediately as he taunted them out the door. At that instant he earned the respect of every there and when we got back to the barracks it didn’t take long for everyone to know what he had done. What we need now is a Sgt Bennett and the 82nd Airborne to go to Minneapolis to first talk to Walz and Frey face to face and tell them of his plans and then confront the agitators. He’d give them a millisecond to disperse and start kicking ass We need a Sgt Bennett there to take care of business
